Surat’s diamond industry trades about Rs 200 crore worth of diamonds every day.
The stones are mostly dispatched to jewellery manufacturing units in Mumbai, where they’re transformed into glittering jewellery.
I asked a diamond manufacturer how they were transported, expecting a high level of security to be involved.
To my astonishment, he said many consignments usually make their way to Mumbai on crowded buses and general compartments of trains.
The stones are carried by ‘angadias’, human couriers from the Unja Patel community. The clan has provided couriers to the industry for almost four decades.
